Oyster
Pond is actually not fresh water. This relatively
small beach is located on a saltwater inlet, connected to Nantucket
Sound through Oyster River, which runs into Stage Harbor at the end
of Harding's Beach (check out our map below if you're understandably
confused.)
Though
the beach can get overrun by children in peak season it is conveniently
located near downtown, has ample parking for about 40 cars, a raft
with regular swimming lesson classes, and the water is usually warm
and calm. A brand new restroom facitlity was
built here in the spring of 2005 and a lifeguard is posted on duty. Overall,
Oyster Pond makes a great break from downtown shopping, and a great
quick swim for the kids. However, it probably does not provide
enough ocean stimulation for a stereotypical day at the seaside.
It does have
one amenity that is a rare treat here and is not found at any other beach in
town- a formal picnic area behind the beach equipped with
picnic tables, charcoal grills, and benches, enough to suit 4 families or
so. See the photos below. The addition of beach-oriented
barbecuing potential gives Oyster Pond good potential for a slot
in your summer schedule.
