Red
River Beach is actually in Harwich, but we're including it here,
since it's just over the Chatham line off Route 28. It's a
Nantucket Sound Beach and, though
it's smaller than both Hardings and Ridgevale, this is the largest
beach in Harwich with both lifeguards and bathrooms facilities.
There is no permanent food option here but the ice cream truck
makes frequent visits to this beach.
It's
also a favorite launch place for kayakers, para-surfers, windsurfers,
sailors and fishermen who want a short run over to Monomoy
Island Wildlife Refuge.
The
parking lot accomodates 250 cars and parking pass (available at the
beach) is required between 9AM and 5pm.
Directions:
There are several roads from Rt 28 near the Harwich/Chatham line that access
Red River Beach. Uncle Venie's Lane is the most obvious access but do
not take Red River Rd. It's counter-intuitive (as we Cape Codder's can
be) but this road is a dead-end and no doubt gets lots of confused traffic
turning around in private driveways. Uncle Venie's Lane - Yes. Red
River Rd- No.
